Council Retreat

We spent the day together at Presentation Center and had a wonderful time considering the mission and the goals (Vision 2010) of the University and how each of our individual units are working together to create a university that supports students and faculty as they are learning and doing research and teaching.
We revisited the Library's strategic goals and talked about our unit goals.
Three themes emerged for library-wide professional development that would help each of us accomplish the various initiatives in our departments:
(1) enhance understanding and skills in using technology,
(2) further define what we want our standards to be for customer service (which includes our service to each other as well as to library users) and enhance understanding and skills in evaluating and continuously improving our service delivery,
(3) improve our organizational effectiveness through leadership development and by recreating our identity as members of the campus community with an academic mission.
Our plan for library-wide opportunities for 2008-09 will include:
(1) Technology Tuesdays - once a month we'll invite library staff to present a workshop on new technologies they are using and how we might use technology to enhance our services, teaching and communication with each other and with our users.
(2) A series of workshops offered by Rona Halualani and Dr. Nicko on the diversity represented on campus, and how to improve our services, teaching and communication with one another given different learning styles and backgrounds.
(3) An SJSU Summer Olympics event
(4) A speaker on trends in academic libraries
(5) Offering Brown Bag lunches for staff and faculty presentation
(6) A speaker (perhaps Shelly Phipps) to enhance our organizatonal effectiveness, specifically in the area of leadership
Members of the Council will visit each of the unit staff meetings in June & July to further discuss the themes for the year and get ideas and responses from everyone.

Professional Development and Staff Training Council Meeting Notes for 3/26/2008
Present: Altafal, Lauren, Luann, Bernice
The Committee reviewed plans for the intranet site. Altafal will create a calendar for the Council. He will also create a feedback button that will go to all Council members. Altafal has sent the link. Please send your comments to him. Luann discussed the plans for the May 23 Retreat. She said that the campus focus will be diversity and she asked how can we incorporate this theme into the library's activities? She asked us to think about what competencies staff and faculty need to accomplish their jobs. Bernice will check with the library faculty to determine what trainings and/or development they are interested in for 2008/2009. Shelly Phipps has been proposed as a speaker on leadership for a one or two day retreat. For the May 30 in-service Shannon and Sarah will discuss the new web site redesign and library safety issues will also be covered. April 15 will be library employees day and the Dean and Director will have a cake for all employees. There also will be other activities involving employees of both libraries. We should encourage participation. Next meeting of the Council will be April 23 at 10:00 A M.

Suggestion for In Service training - Security
From Julie Kowalewski-Ward:
All - my staff just met with Gordon to discuss the Internet Filtering issue and how to approach patrons viewing pornography or being disruptive.
In discussions afterward, it was suggested a really good topic might be to have Security come and discuss personal safety, public safety, and issues around approaching patrons. I know we had John Laws do a presentation last January and it was well received by staff, this is a topic that is of interest to most staff. Perhaps we could have this instead of SharePoint or have SharePoint as an option from 10-11:30 for those units that don't want to meet. Just an idea I thought to pass along. Maybe we could tie it to the revitalized BET as well. If you don't think it would be of general interest then maybe just Access Services will meet with him.

RE: Proposal Two-Day Leadership Conference for Faculty and Staff
This year we would like to have a two-day program focused on Library Effectiveness and Leadership. As we have discussed in our FLG meetings, there is a great need to address leadership within the teams and among the faculty. As an organization, we also have a need to develop leadership effectiveness at all levels, and thus we would like to propose inviting Shelley Phipps from the University of Arizona to lead a two-day program focused on Library Effectiveness and Faculty Leadership. One day would focus on a full/half day in-service for the entire staff, and the second day would focus on library faculty leadership.
Mary Somerville has recommended Shelly Phipps, who leads the organizational staff development and assessment program at the University of Arizona at Tucson. She has published several articles on this topic. See the links below. It would cost approximately $4,000-5,000 to bring her in for two days, which would include expenses (hotel, travel, food). We understand that she charges $2000 per day plus expenses.
Normally the Faculty Retreat would last a full-day, 9-4, but if cost is factor, perhaps we could ask her to conduct a half day staff in service, and one-full day workshop for the faculty. We look forward to your response.
Respectfully submitted,
Danelle, Shannon, and Lorene

Brown Bag Series: Faculty and Staff participation
Library Worker Day – Annual Recognition Day
Bring Student Assistant and New Employee Orientation agendas and checklists/manuals as well as Campus information packet. Ask for additions and curriculum for joint library orientation.
Plan the annual welcome reception for new employees: July.
Summer Olympics
Suggestions
I've heard that we used to do a Brown Bag series in which SJSU library employees did some sort of presentation (and not necessarily library related) demonstrating a skill or knowledge in an informal environment during lunch time. Perhaps this might be resurrected? I saw it mentioned on your blog but I don't know if you mean something else. I'm not talking about the library faculty brown bag series.
I'd like to see an Annual Recognition Day, either for SJSU library employees only or a joint library recognition day. I envision a mix of serious and not so serious awards. Like the Oscar, but, "And the King goes to --- "
I also heard that the entire campus once did a staff Olympics. Might be fun to do some activities together just for the library in terms of organizational growth ---something like bowling or Tug of War on the lawn. Or perhaps a technology widgets and gadgets Olympics
